JarzAndBarz was finally created in the Summer of 2008 in hopes of sharing our soaps’ benefits with the rest of the world. Our family has always valued the use of natural products and ingredients and has implemented them in our lives for as long as I can remember. The decision to actually market our soaps came when a beloved family member became awfully ill and I was at a loss of how to help him. Believe it or not, I found the answer in soap!
The Griz Story…
White Toed Grizley, my German Shepherd and the inspiration behind our line of all-natural soaps.
So, that’s when it hit me. I starting evaluating every product that I owned to see what was in it and what it did for my skin or my health. I started with bathing and cleaning products and was absolutely appalled of what I found. Everything that touched my skin was a chemical, mostly synthetic. I found out that according to the FDA, bathing or cleaning products of any kind did not have to list ingredients unless they claimed their product did something beneficial to the consumer. I called companies to have ingredient lists sent to me and the shock continued. There was absolutely nothing natural in these products! Now, not only did I want to help my dog’s coat, I was worried about my own families’ health while using these products.
So, the search began. I began investigating the qualities of oils and herbs and wondering how I could make my own soaps. After multiple book purchases and internet searches, I finally found my answer at the library: Melinda Coss, and the Handmade Soap Book. Her book gave me every last bit of insight that I needed to finalize my product.
Why Use Handmade Soap?
Next time you visit your local grocery or supermarket, pick up a bottle or bar of "soap" or shampoo and look at the ingredients. Chances are that you won't recognize over half of the ingredients, let alone be able to pronounce them. The difference between real handmade soaps and these "soaps" is simple. They are not soap! These "soaps" that you buy in the store are made of synthetic petroleum and chemical derivatives. These store bought soaps, also known as crude soaps, are soaps which have had the glycerin content extracted from them, which is why they can be drying to your skin. Real handmade soaps leave all the glycerin remaining in the soaps which is why true handmade soaps do not dry out your skin. So what is real handmade soap?
Real handmade soap is made when an animal or vegetable fat is combined with an alkali, or base agent, known as either sodium hydroxide (lye) or potassium hydroxide (potash) and the process of saponification occurs. Originally our great ancestors combined pork lard with the liquid extracts from hardwood ashes to make the first real handmade soaps. Needless to say, there was no way to accurately measure out the amount of lye needed and they ended up with either really soupy soap or really caustic soap! But thanks to the wide range of resources available today, the amount of lye needed can be calculated exactly. Our soaps, handmade soaps, are made from natural occurring ingredients, many of which are grown right here in Auburn Township, Ohio. A wide range of naturally occurring oils and herbs are used which benefits the skin in so many ways.
Our soaps are handmade by us in small batches from scratch using the cold process method. Only the finest oils and herbs are used. All our soaps are personally trialed on our own family and friends before available for sale.
So, here they are…a few of "My Life’s Recipes" that I have created with the inspiration of my family, friends, and Mother Earth herself.
